        會稱作70年代三部曲的原因，是因為Pink Floyd在1970年代發行了"The Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You were Here", "The Wall"這三張曠世巨作，成功的將這個英國團體推升至同時期幾乎無人能望其項背的地位，也因為實在無法以傳統的音樂類型來定義Pink Floyd的風格，因而用"Progressive"來形容Pink Floyd的音樂，也因此Pink Floyd成為"Progressive Rock"(前衛搖滾)最為經典的代表團體之一。

1. 1964~1967 成軍故事

        Pink Floyd成軍於1964年英國倫敦，1964~1967年時主導者為創始團長主奏吉他手兼主唱Syd Barrett，也是絕大多數詞曲作者。早期樂風受美國藍調音樂影響，但很快的，樂團受同時期的迷幻搖滾樂影響，曲風開始帶有迷幻藥色彩，在藍調、民謠風的搖滾樂曲中加入各種奇想天外的聲音實驗，團長Syd Barrett優異的單曲創作能力，也為草創的Pink Floyd提高不少知名度。1967年的「The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn」也是同時期最成功的迷幻搖滾專輯之一，正當樂團由Syd Barrett領導走向迷幻之路時，Syd Barrett卻成為迷幻藥的犧牲者，因精神問題被迫離團。

2. 1967~1972 實驗時期

        團長離團後，Pink Floyd找了老朋友(一說是Syd Barrett的吉它老師)David Gilmour來頂替吉它手位置，漸漸的Bass手Roger Water開始躍居創作主軸位置。Syd Barrett是個不錯的吉它手，David Gilmour更是個傑出的高手，Gilmour不以快速彈奏見長，但對氣氛的營造卻很在行，加上Rick Wright的Keyboard帶來空靈的音場，Roger Waters(Bass)及Nick Mason(Drums)的低音也替樂團的音樂增加不少力道。在失去Barrett的單曲作品，樂團在幾經考量後，逐漸轉為注重舞台演出為主，並以新式的音響效果佐以炫麗影像效果演出。在1967~1972樂團曲風也由藍調搖滾結合實驗性音樂的小品，慢慢的走向開始注意歌詞深度，出現長篇大論實驗的概念性音樂。曲風的轉換，也讓Pink Floyd從早期的單曲團體，搖身一變為注重專輯架構的搖滾樂團。兩張一套的"Ummagumma"(1969)及"Atom Heart Mother"(1970)是這時期的代表作。

3. 1973 光芒萬丈的"The Dark Side of the Moon"

        讓樂團邁向偉大之路的契機，就在1973年。1973年Pink Floyd發行了"The Dark Side of the Moon"，樂團的實力在此時可謂已臻成熟，在前幾張專輯所做的實驗性生澀感，在"The Dark Side of the Moon"中都不復存在，成熟的樂風、警世的寓意，構成一張主題明確、音樂吸引人且風格圓熟的概念性唱片。從片頭曲"Speak to Me"的心跳聲開始，到Time的鐘鼓齊鳴，Money的收銀機聲，"Dark Side"發燒級的音效就開始讓人印象深刻，當然若"Dark Side"只是一張發燒唱片，可能無法長賣30幾年，。"Dark Side of the Moon"成功的原因，在於它完美的做到發人深醒的主題、動聽的音樂、高品質的音效及錄音的面面平衡。無論Time、Money都有作為暢銷單曲的實力，而The Great Gig in the Sky中Clare Torry沒有歌詞而盡情揮灑的女高音也令人陶醉，一直到專輯尾聲Brain Damage及Eclipse讓人深思的陰暗歌詞，讓整張唱片耐聽，也似乎不受時代影響而褪色。甚至可以說在"Dark Side of the Moon"、"Wish You were Here"、"The Wall"這3張Pink Floyd在70年代曠世鉅作中，"Dark Side"是其中音樂最動聽的作品。

4. 榮耀及後記

        "Dark Side of the Moon"發行後旋及登上美國Billbord專輯榜榜首(英國Top 2)，並且破紀錄的在專輯榜上停留了741週，在全世界賣出了超過4000萬張，是流行音樂史上最暢銷的專輯之一。在"Dark Side"中，Roger Waters無疑的已躍居樂團主導者，尤其他所創作的詞，對於人性脆弱及黑暗面的討論令人震撼，Pink Floyd也從此開始了以探討人性為主題的創作主軸，卻也由於Waters的表現及強勢，也種下Pink Floyd日後不合解體的遠因。
